It’s been confirmed that Florida based, 2018 XXL Freshman artist, Wifisfuneral best known for being a part of the “Soundcloud era of rap”, former artist in XXXTentacion’s Members only, has started collaborating with some more lesser known artists. Whether it’s a way of bringing some shine on the newcomers of the industry and wholesomely helping these rappers on the come up or potentially it could be because of his decline in relevancy. Either way Wifisfuneral has ingrained himself into the music history books, the rapper coming off his latest project “Smoking Mirrors” has declined in popularity since his 2017-2018 days. Regardless of his relevancy Wifisfuneral is still pushing out music that his core fanbase love him for, his music has developed a lot from his Soundcloud emo rap days and has become a more mature artist. Still he’s the Wifisfuneral we recognize him for but his recent projects have shown him experimenting a lot with new sounds.
His 2020 album titled “Pain” which included a feature from now mainstream artist Coi Leray and was a good example of him stepping outside what we knew him for.
Wifisfuneral has been quiet lately after his latest single drop “Euphoria” but Australian artist Aztec Flow recently posted on his instagram story previewing his song featuring Wifisfuneral.
My first question was, who is Aztec Flow and why should we care about this? Well as I dove deeper into the rabbit hole, it was interesting to me how an artist all the way down under was working with someone like Wifisfuneral and how influential rap is internationally.
Now Australian rappers aren’t unheard of since we’ve seen artists like Kid Leroy burst onto the scene and in the past Iggy Azalea but what stood out to me is that this artist is doing it all. While I was investigating, I noticed that Aztec not only writes and produces but on top of that films all of his own music videos.
Since following Aztec I’ve watched behind the scene clips of music videos that I haven’t seen much of before. 1800s, western based music video, costumes, incredible makeup and FX. Movie level productions and even a music video with S.W.A.T. I haven’t seen this level of production in an independent artist before and that’s why it’s been so intriguing seeing a rapper who is not only a rapper but in a way his own production company and record label as well.
On top of his collaboration with Wifisfuneral, I think this is a very interesting artist not just for his music but his potential to redefine what an artist is in rap, That artists don’t have to be only an rapper but that they can venture in to other creative areas and dominate in those as well. Tupac Shakur is a prime example of how a rapper can be much more than just a rapper and artists like this 25 year old artist from Australia is an example of how a rapper can be much more than just a rapper. This collaboration is coming on the back of an anticipated album that Aztec has announced on instagram called “WDRL”. The collaboration is a potential sign that we need to maybe keep an eye down under for more rising talent and just maybe we may start to see more Australian artists burst onto the scene. Aztec Flow just recently delivered us a music video shot by himself, for his latest single titled “Focus”. It’s a really beautiful music video and has a lot of visual storytelling and double meaning in the scenes. I look forward to seeing what this young artist brings to the culture and how he can top everything he’s already doing.
