It’s not very often that a bassist goes from touring with a pop-rock band to fundamentally changing the way people view the bass guitar. That said, Hall has done exactly that; the New Jersey bass virtuoso has been making waves for his unorthodox solo playing style that fuses together a variety of different techniques. Under the musical moniker “Mike Hall Bass”, Hall has put his skills on full display with performances to songs that cross over multiple genres, some of which include takes on “Heartless” by The Weeknd, “Everlong” by Foo Fighters, and “Californication” by Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Hall’s ability to create beats within beats on four strings was something that immediately caught my attention. Between all of the slapping and tapping, Hall’s playing ties melody and rhythm together, which is something I never thought possible from a bass. If Brady Watt and Thundercat’s playing had a child, it would probably be something close to what Hall is doing right now.

Mike’s “Wolfhouse” Recording Studio is where he tracks all his sessions before sending them to the mastering engineer.  This is his stomping ground as he finalizes his projects. When it comes to his singles, the attention to detail put into these performances is something else that I can’t stress enough. The bass is not supposed to do this, yet I found myself easily singing along to the verses and choruses of “Heartless” in a state of disbelief. The same can be said with his versions of “Everlong” and “Californication”. With the Foo Fighters most famous song, Hall begins with a series of flamenco strumming and the use of dazzling harmonics. In its entirety, Hall goes up and down the neck of the bass to echo Grohl’s lyrics, almost making it sound as if it’s crying. The same can be said for the iconic Chili Peppers tune.

Although I don’t usually cover musicians like Hall, what he’s doing is so unique that I had to make an exception. His style of play is equally creative as it is impressive, and I would be curious to see what he could come up with to a song inspired by the likes of Kendrick, J. Cole, or Khalid.
