Musical artist King DaVinci began his lyrical journey at just thirteen years old in his hometown of Newark, New Jersey. It was there he discovered his love and natural talent for free-styling. It was during his adolescence that he sought solace in free-styling with friends, allowing the words to flow effortlessly, enhancing his already deep connection with music.
“Where I’m from is the root of it all,” DaVinci says. “It shaped my experiences with music coming up in the game.”
As someone who classifies his music as lyrical poetry, DaVinci’s fluidity and ability to express himself transcends musical genres. He seamlessly blends rap, hip hop, jazz, EDM, and more to create a sonic landscape of sound that defies categorization. Davinci says as long as it makes him feel something, he can channel deep emotion into the lyrics.
“The connection for music has always been there from the very beginning of time,” he says, “but it really started when I was thirteen during the boom box era, a friend of mine was walking through the elementary school alley, boom box in hand, jamming to a song written by Tupac called ‘Until The End Of Time.’” That song hit a chord literally.
DaVinci goes on to state that it was at that moment a fire ignited within and a passion for self expression through music surfaced. He decided music was what he was going to do. Pulling inspiration from both his own life and the stories around him, DaVinci worked to create a unique sound.
“And so the journey began with freestyling acapella, over endless instrumentals for years to come,” he says.
DaVinci strives to create music that is reflective of the world around him. His lyrics are true to his own experiences, it’s his narrative of triumph, perseverance, and struggle woven through the notes of his story. DaVinci’s music is known for more than poignant lyrics; he puts on an incredible performance that engage audiences and leave them wanting more.
“Sixteen years later, with work towards the dream still in the process, I can honestly say I’m closer to the finish line than I have ever been,” he says.
DaVinci says that his strength and at times his curse as an artist is to be critical of himself and his work. A perfectionist by nature, he understands the importance of conditioning and rehearsing before the recording process. He is well aware that he is “his own worst enemy”; and as a result, he doesn’t like to compare himself to anyone else. However, his musical influences—such as Tupac, Dr Dre, Mob Deep, DMX, Nas, and 50Cent, to name a few—have pushed him to create the music he feels brings out only the best in himself, as well as music that brings out emotions in others.
“There’s too many vibes out there to name them all or to be tied to just one” he says.
With his first single coming down the pipeline, and the production of a music video in progress, King DaVinci is set to make his vision finally come true after so many years of hard work. His humble beginnings fueled by his drive to create only the best, will surely make him an artist to watch. With every beat and lyric he invites us on a journey of self discovery and expression, reminding us that true art knows no boundaries only boundless possibilities of the universal language of music.
