Within the last year, someone had sent me a link to, at the time, a new song by an artist I thought I was already familiar with. However, that song was not by the band I was expecting, and turned out to exceed any song I would’ve expected. Today, I was given an album’s worth of music. Closer to Closure pushes the envelope on what most artists deem possible for a debut album.
Pheonix is a 23-year-old singer-songwriter who has been making music since he was 11. Pheonix has spent all of this time towards making music, producing songs, playing shows, and everything in between. He did not go viral on Soundcloud, Vine, TikTok, or other platforms, but he was consistent, and a good product will always sell.
Closer to Closure is as it sounds. The alternative-pop project showcases Pheonix finding closure within different scenarios outlayed by the album. Some themes are more generalized towards losing a romantic partner or family member, while other revelations are more reflective of either the things Pheonix personally endured or is watching others endure. Tougher topics fused with happier instrumentation with discussions ranging from homelessness, depression, suicide, and others make the album an authentic listen.
The album delivers a variety of genres and sounds such as pop, alternative, indie, rock, punk, EDM, along with an array of others. Most songs do have a pop-formula with catchy hooks, melodic vocals, harmonies, and complimentary leads from guitars, pianos, and synths. Pheonix proves to be an incredible lyricist and potentially one of the best for his age. Every lyric, measure, and second feels crucial to the overall conclusion or image the song tries to convey.
The album is estimated to take 6 months to make with the first sessions starting this last March. Pheonix and Jon Hasz are the sole participants of the album’s sessions. Jon Hasz is the owner of Ramona Afterhours studio and is the lead engineer for the project. Pheonix and Jon have been working together for over 10 years with Closer to Closure being the first album from either of them.
