Ashtray Jonny is an independent artist from Greensboro, North Carolina whose music refuses to stay inside one box.

His sound is rooted in rap and hip-hop, but reaches into trap, R&B, soul, jazz, blues, and occasional rock and pop influences. His catalog reflects an artist who has spent years experimenting, studying music, developing his own voice, and eventually learning how to bring his many influences together into one recognizable sound.

Ashtray Jonny isn’t interested in making every song sound identical. He wants listeners to know they’re listening to him while never knowing exactly what they’re going to hear next. That versatility — once one of his biggest challenges — has become one of his greatest strengths.

THE STORY

Ashtray Jonny’s story doesn’t begin with a record deal, a major studio, or a manufactured image. It begins with a kid from Greensboro, North Carolina, who found music early and slowly built an entire world around it.

He grew up in a two-parent household, but behind the appearance of a normal family was a much more complicated reality. His parents worked extensively, and his childhood was affected by abuse and instability. Later, his parents divorced after he discovered that his father had been unfaithful — an experience that drastically changed his life and the way he viewed his family.

After the divorce, he moved in with family, including his father, grandmother, uncle, and brother. Around the age of 15, he was kicked out.

Being forced to figure life out at such a young age pushed him further toward independence. Music became more than something he enjoyed. It became something that belonged to him — something he could build when there wasn’t much else he could depend on.

DISCOVERING RAP

Music entered Ashtray Jonny’s life early.

His musical influences developed over time, beginning with artists and groups such as Three 6 Mafia and Eminem, before 2Pac and Eazy-E helped ignite his deeper love for rap.

Then he discovered Lil Wayne.

Everything changed.

Lil Wayne’s flow, wordplay, delivery, and freestyle ability pushed Ashtray Jonny to approach rap differently. His interest in freestyle became stronger, and he began experimenting more heavily with his own flow and delivery.

At the same time, artists such as Kanye West and André 3000 showed him another side of hip-hop — creativity, experimentation, musicianship, individuality, and the freedom to make something that didn’t necessarily fit an existing formula.

His influences continued expanding: Jay-Z, Wu-Tang Clan, Future, Al Green, Luther Vandross, Erykah Badu, Nina Simone, Michael Jackson, and many other artists became pieces of the musical foundation that would eventually become Ashtray Jonny.

Future, in particular, had been an influence since high school.

BEFORE RECORDING ON A PHONE WAS NORMAL

Long before recording music on a phone became commonplace, Ashtray Jonny was experimenting with the idea.

At one point, he was putting his phone next to a speaker and rapping into it. That simple setup helped start his journey into recording.

He also understood early that the internet could be more than entertainment. It could be a platform.

Ashtray Jonny was uploading music online, using YouTube, experimenting with online content, and making YouTube vlogs before vlogging became a standard part of how artists and creators built audiences.

He came through the era of physical CDs and mixtapes, passing his music out himself and using online platforms and mixtape blogs such as DatPiff to get his music heard.

Then the industry changed. He changed with it.

THE ATLANTA CHAPTER

Around the age of 19, Ashtray Jonny moved to Georgia.

The move opened another major chapter in his development.

He became heavily involved in networking and connecting with people throughout the music industry. He met artists, creatives, producers, and recognizable names while continuing to develop his own sound and learn how the industry operated.

Atlanta exposed him to another side of Southern hip-hop and gave him opportunities to expand his network and artistic perspective.

But he wasn’t simply trying to copy what was already happening around him. He was continuing to develop his own vision.

TOO VERSATILE TO FIT ONE BOX

For years, Ashtray Jonny’s versatility was both his greatest strength and one of his biggest obstacles.

His catalog could sound dramatically different from one record to another.

He experimented with different genres, flows, production styles, moods, tempos, and approaches. Everything was part of his artistic identity, but the variety sometimes made it difficult for people to immediately understand exactly what his sound was.

Eventually, he realized he didn’t need to choose. He needed to combine.

Instead of separating every influence into a different version of himself, he began bringing those influences together.

The result is a musical identity built around rap, hip-hop, trap, R&B, soul, jazz, and blues, with occasional touches of rock and pop.

The music can be aggressive, melodic, dark, soulful, experimental, energetic, reflective, or completely unexpected.

But the goal is always the same: Make it sound like Ashtray Jonny.

THE SOUND

Ashtray Jonny’s music is intentionally complex without being complicated for the sake of being complicated.

His influences can be heard throughout the catalog, but he doesn’t want to simply reproduce the sounds that inspired him. He wants to build something new from them.

One record might lean heavily into trap and bass. Another might pull from R&B or soul. Another may feel darker and more atmospheric. Another may lean toward traditional hip-hop, jazz, blues, or even rock.

That unpredictability is intentional.

The listener should be able to move through the catalog without feeling like they’re hearing the same record repeatedly.

You know the artist. You just don’t know what he’s going to do next.

THE RESET

There was a period when Ashtray Jonny knew his music wasn’t yet reaching the level he believed it could.

He worked with different engineers and producers, including people with significant industry experience and award-winning backgrounds.

Over time, he became increasingly dissatisfied with the way some of his music was being shaped. He felt that the sound coming back to him wasn’t properly representing what he was trying to create.

Instead of giving up, he took more control.

He eventually began producing more of his own music.

That decision became a reset.

Producing his own material allowed him to take greater control over the sound, arrangements, production, and overall direction.

In many ways, it brought him back to the instincts he had when he first started making music.

The goal wasn’t to erase the old catalog. It was to understand it.

EVERY ERA IS PART OF THE STORY

Ashtray Jonny wants listeners to hear the entire progression.

The early recordings. The experiments. The different sounds. The records that worked. The records that didn’t. The periods where he drifted away from the sound he originally envisioned. The return to his own instincts.

All of it matters.

Rather than pretending the earlier music never happened, he sees the catalog as documentation of his growth.

Every era shows another piece of the artist.

AHEAD OF THE CURVE

Ashtray Jonny has always viewed himself as someone whose ideas sometimes arrived before people were ready to understand them.

From experimenting with music through a phone, to using the internet to distribute and promote music, to creating YouTube content before it became a standard part of an artist’s career, he has repeatedly found himself experimenting outside traditional methods.

He compares that feeling to the story of Nikola Tesla — not as a literal comparison, but as a reflection of what it feels like to have a vision that other people don’t immediately understand.

His philosophy is simple: Sometimes being different looks like being wrong until people understand what you were trying to build.

THE APPALACHIAN HIATUS

Eventually, Ashtray Jonny stepped away from the noise.

He spent approximately a year and a half in the Appalachian Mountains, living at the top of the mountains and dedicating that period to himself, his craft, and his music.

Away from the distractions and expectations surrounding the industry, he continued developing his sound and working on himself as an artist.

That period became another reset.

When he eventually returned home to North Carolina, he wasn’t simply returning to make more music. He was returning with a clearer vision.

RETURNING HOME

Now, Ashtray Jonny is bringing everything he has learned back to where the story began: Greensboro, North Carolina.

The goal is bigger than releasing another single.

He is building an artist brand, a catalog, a sound, a visual identity, and a body of work that can stand on its own.

He has numerous albums and songs in development and on the way.

The previous chapters aren’t being erased. They’re becoming part of the foundation.

From the kid discovering 2Pac and Eazy-E, to discovering Lil Wayne, studying Kanye and André 3000, absorbing influences from Future, Jay-Z, Wu-Tang Clan, soul legends, R&B pioneers, and Michael Jackson, recording through a phone, distributing CDs and mixtapes, building online, moving to Georgia, networking throughout the industry, experimenting with different sounds, producing his own music, stepping away to the Appalachian Mountains, and finally returning home — every chapter led to the next.

THE MISSION

Ashtray Jonny is no longer trying to prove that he can make different kinds of music.

He’s building a world where all those sounds can exist together.

The mission is to create music that is versatile without losing identity, experimental without losing feeling, and unpredictable without losing the listener.

He wants people to go through his catalog and hear the progression for themselves.

And now he’s bringing that sound back to the place where the story began: Greensboro, North Carolina.

His goal is to represent his city, represent his state, and bring North Carolina along for the journey.

This isn’t the beginning of the story.

It’s the next chapter.
