Radio stations dedicated to or those that mostly play classic Hip-Hop are on the rise. According to the New York Times, the conversion of these stations has been relatively successful. KROI-FM, a Houston, Texas station has grow from 245,000 listeners to 802,000 listeners in just two months.
WPHI-FM also known as Boom Philly 107.9FM, a Philly station, has also decided to dedicate it’s airplay to the roots of the genre and has developed a listener base of 736,000 people.
According to the Times article, not all stations that have decided to switch to classic Hip-Hop have steady high ratings, some stations suffer from a drop in people tuning in after only a few weeks. Many other stations like KROI-FM are said to be coming this year throughout the US.
