The 2015 NFL season for the San Francisco 49ers as been dim and things don’t appear to be getting any better. After releasing their former head coach Jim Harbaugh during the offseason, things have been going down hill for the 49ers and their latest news will have you shaking your head.
49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has struggled all season long and his struggles have led him to the bench. The 49ers have announced that Blaine Gabbert will be their starting quarterback this Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons meaning Colin Kaepernick has been benched.
According to ESPN,
The San Francisco 49ers aren’t stopping with a trade of their star tight end as they seek a turnaround after a 2-6 start. Their shakeup will include swapping quarterback Colin Kaepernick for Blaine Gabbert, a source confirmed to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter on Monday night.
Gabbert will take over as the Niners play at home against the Atlanta Falcons (6-2) on Sunday in the final game before their bye week.
Earlier Monday, coach Jim Tomsula said the team was “evaluating everything,” including benching Kaepernick.
Kaepernick has been benched for his birthday, as he turns 28 on Tuesday. Last week, he had been described in a Fox Sports report as being on “an island” in the Niners locker room. Sources told ESPN’s Schefter the usually solitary Kaepernick had stopped wearing his ever-present headphones in the lunchroom and had started engaging with teammates.
Tomsula had disputed the characterization, as did a few teammates. But that was before their latest loss, a 27-6 defeat Sunday at St. Louis.
Kaepernick went a fourth straight game without an interception in the loss. But he was also held without a touchdown for the second consecutive game. He threw for 162 yards on 20-for-41 passing and rushed for 28 yards.
Kaepernick could be traded this offseason if the niners look to go in another direction. Stay tuned to HHS1987 for all your sports.
