Just hours ahead of football’s biggest game of the year, JAY-Z breaks his silence on his deal with the NFL – which has stirred up some controversy – and Colin Kaepernick. In an interview conducted for The New York Times, Jay shed light on why he decided to do business with the League after their highly publicized mistreatment of Colin Kaepernick. Last Summer, JAY-Z made a surprising announcement about a new partnership with the NFL – both a music partnership and a social justice focused one. Many fans and followers, alike, saw the conjoining of the two as hypocritical and essentially a betrayal of Kaepernick.
Willing to take the criticism, Jay shared that, “as long as real people are being hurt and marginalized and losing family members, then yes, I can take a couple rounds of negative press. No one is saying he hasn’t been done wrong (Kaepernick). He was done wrong. I would understand if it was three months ago. But it was three years ago, and someone needs to say, What do we do now – because people are still dying!”
In the interview, Jay continues to shed light on his thoughts on the NFL, Roc Nation’s involvement in the League’s new “Inspire Change” initiative – that focuses on education and economic advancement, police and community relations, and criminal justice reform.
