A big issue for musicians all across the world is getting the appropriate representation. Artists are always trapped between retaining their rights, but getting poor streaming numbers, or reaching a wider audience, but having to sign their rights away. It’s an impossible choice, one that Sharpline Distro seeks to eliminate.
“It’s a trend everywhere you look,” says David James, Sharpline Distro’s Managing Director. “More and more artists are wanting to be independent, keep their rights, but obviously, also enjoy success & growth in their careers.”
And that’s what Sharpline Distro is offering. Founded by Victor Byke out of a genuine passion for music in all its forms, Sharpline Distro is an affordable, accessible distribution service that connects artists with broad audiences, without forcing them to sign away their rights to their own music.
According to James, at least 50 artists on the Sharpline roster are making whopping profits of over $1 million from streaming alone, every year. This comes only months after Sharpline Distro announced that hundreds of their artists were breaking $50k royalty mark yearly through streaming. Now, for any artist, those are pretty impressive numbers, and for an independent artist with full rights to their music, it almost sounds too good to be true.
While declining to comment on a precise number, James insists it’s a “sizeable number”, and that it’s precisely this possibility of making decent profits while staying independent that’s driving business. In the past year alone, Sharpline Distro’s roster has grown by 60%, with more artists signing on every day.
“It’s about building a sustainable career,” says James. “Staying independent is important, and more people are starting to see that. Music isn’t just about making a good record. It’s about keeping your rights, and earning your dues.”
“With a $50k profit and full rights to your music, that’s $1 million in the masters value of sellable rights,” adds chairman Victor Byke. Taking those numbers a step further, that means several artists in the Sharpline roster are worth over $5 million individually.
In the coming year, Sharpline is focusing on two things: investing $15 million in the artists currently signed to their record, Sharpline Distro Records, and supporting middle-tier artists.
“Middle-tier artists are generally between $25k and $1 million in value, and constantly overlooked,” insists Byke. “Except that’s a growing business, and a booming part of the music world. We believe it’s going to be a $7 billion sector by 2025, so we’re definitely focusing a lot of our attention on that.”
Sharpline Distro’s also focusing on scaling up, with their artists earning over $50k a year, and many of them breaking the million barrier.
