Early 2000s Hip-Hop had a distinctive sound and influence on the culture. If you remember anything about this monumental era and its key players, it’s hard not to mention Akon and his influence. Eapecially his role in bringing other superstars to the forefront like Lady Gaga and T-Pain. Many might even argue that Akon ushered in the singing/rap styles many artist utilize today.
Akon is back on the scene with new music and with a track record like his, he’s one to pay attention to. His new single Enjoy That gives us a bit of that nostalgic mainstream sound we’ve known him to deliver, but if you thought Akon’s return to music would be Afrobeats you wouldn’t be completely off. While Enjoy That caters to a different audience Akon confirms there’s a lot more to expect in a recent interview, Deposit$ with Brook England.
The Senegalese icon and philanthropist revealed he played a major role in Davido and WizKid being the poster children for AfroBeats — which many might deem to be the fastest growing genre forcing the charts to make room. Does that make Akon the Godfather of AfroBeats? He says no. He even shares his thoughts on fans crediting Drake for WizKid’s ascension.
What about Nigeria’s most distinctive rising star, Tems? Like so many, Akon is a fan of her artistry and alludes to a possible collab with the Grammy-winning songstress. What would a Tems and Akon link up sound like? It would probably be classic.
The mogul goes on to explain how he went from Locked Up to locked in on his legacy and business ventures. He even landed himself the first ever Tik Tok partnership.
Could Akon be setting a new trend once again? Considering the amount of artist rising to stardom through the platform, this seems like a no brainer.
He also talks developing one of the world’s first smart cities, Akon City and having his own currency, Akoin. Trust me this interview is refreshing start to finish.
