Even when I’m in church, can’t put my strap down.” —21 Lil Harold

21 Lil Harold’s “Sundown” is his most thematic work to date. The Atlanta upstart, known as a standout member of 21 Savage’s Slaughtergang music imprint, a subsidiary of Epic Records, delivers cautionary tales over a cryptic sample beside his Atlanta brethren J.I.D., whose confident delivery and cutting-edge depictions of life in the “A” are right at home beside Lil Harold’s chilling drawl and raw recollection. The video, shot in black-and-white, adds a cinematic element to the suspense of “Sundown,” Lil Harold’s first official single since October’s “You Gon Hurt Me.”
“Sundown” begins another ramp-up for 21 Lil Harold, who enjoyed a banner year in 2023. In January, he released his third solo project, After The Curse, which sported Harold’s biggest single to date, “Ain’t On None,” featuring Slaughtergang head 21 Savage, which has generated over seven million Spotify streams to date. To kick off 2024, Harold made a brief appearance on Savage’s chart-topping american dream album, on the Lil Durk and Metro Boomin-featured “dangerous,” a reminder of the longstanding history between Harold and Savage, and the strength of their Slaughtergang brotherhood.
21 Lil Harold, who has spent the last three years building his reputation in and outside of Atlanta, is poised for a breakout. As Lyrical Lemonade puts it, Harold is “looking like the artist that has the necessary charisma, talent, and connections required to succeed in his cutthroat market,” and records like “Sundown” are indicators of why.
