Born March 20, 1984, in Bangkok, Thailand, Michael Unga, known professionally as The Sarge, has built a unique journey that blends military service, music, and community leadership.

At the age of 20, Michael joined the United States Army, where he attended Basic Training at Fort Benning, Georgia, before being deployed to serve in Iraq and Afghanistan during Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) 5-7 and Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) 9-10. After eight years of military service, he was stationed at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas.

It was during this time that Michael began using music and poetry as an outlet while dealing with the challenges of combat experiences and PTSD. Already an E-5 Sergeant in the Army, his fellow soldiers referred to him as “Sarge,” and the name eventually became his identity as an artist.
