With fashion woven throughout the lyrics, music and imagery, Lish brings the concept of the “covered girl” to life through a blend of runway style and Islamic couture. She is covered, fashionable and confident, showing that modesty can still make a statement.
Released through Halal Gal Entertainment, the four track EP features “Lish Got Next,” “Covered Girl (IRL),” “L’Oréal” featuring Dèja Destinèe and “Very Shady.” Collectively, the songs introduce listeners to an artist who understands exactly who she is and is comfortable occupying a lane that remains largely unexplored in Hip Hop.
For Lish 2X, being a “covered girl” carries more than one meaning.
There is the obvious connection to modest fashion and her Muslim faith, but there is also the woman underneath the clothes: confident, stylish, feminine and fully aware of her presence. Lish does not treat modesty and fashion as opposites. Instead, she makes them partners.
Fashion runs throughout the DNA of the project. A Fashion Institute of Technology alum who has walked runways and spent years developing her own distinctive style, Lish approaches her music almost like a designer approaches a collection. The lyrics, visuals and wardrobe are connected. One moment may feel straight from the runway, while the next draws directly from Islamic couture, creating a visual language that allows modesty to feel luxurious, current and unapologetically fly.
That same philosophy carries into the music.
Lish has built her catalog around clean lyricism without stripping away the confidence, wit and attitude associated with Hip Hop. Rather than conforming to expectations placed on female rappers, she is building from her own experiences as a Muslim woman, mother, artist, journalist and fashion lover.
Her relationship with faith in Hip Hop is not new. Lish previously made her Muslim identity central to projects including The Ramadan Album and The Ramadan Album Reloaded. She has also used records such as “Not Savage” to celebrate Muslim women and showcase hijab alongside contemporary fashion.
Covered Girl, however, feels like another evolution of that idea.
This time, fashion does not simply accompany the music. It becomes part of the storytelling.
The project arrives during a period when Lish is increasingly connecting her different creative worlds. Music, journalism, modeling, media and fashion are no longer separate pieces of her résumé. They are becoming pieces of the same brand.
Her publicist, Lynn Hobson, sees that combination as part of what makes Lish stand apart.
“Lish has the talent, style and originality to create a lane in Hip Hop that is completely her own,” says Hobson.
There is also something significant about seeing a Muslim female Hip Hop artist present herself without feeling obligated to dilute either side of her identity. Lish can love designer fashion and remain covered. She can be feminine and still command the microphone. She can participate in Hip Hop culture while establishing her own boundaries for what she wants her music and imagery to represent.
That is ultimately where COVERGIRL: A Covered Girl makes its statement.
Lish 2X is not asking fashion to make room for her faith or Hip Hop to make room for her modesty. She is bringing all of it with her.
And she is doing it dressed for the occasion.
