The Atlanta Dream will host its annual “I Have a Dream” essay contest beginning Friday, December 16 to recognize the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Atlanta-area students are asked to submit 300-500 word essays expressing their dream and describing the impact of Dr. King.

 

The contest, which will run until January 27, will be judged by a panel including Atlanta Dream president Theresa Wenzel to choose winners in three categories – Elementary, Middle School and High School. Each winner will receive tickets to a Dream game, be recognized on court and will receive a school visit from the franchise. The High School winner will also be eligible to receive a $500 scholarship from the Atlanta Dream Youth Foundation.

 

Entering its historic 10th season, the Atlanta Dream has been connected to Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech from the very beginning. The original Circle of Friends, a group that led to the founding of the organization, took the speech in to consideration when naming the franchise.

 

Essay Contest Details:

 

  • Every essay should start with “I have a dream….” From that point, it is up to the student to express his or her dream in 300-500 words. In one paragraph, the student should describe the impact of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. or what his legacy means.

 

  • The essay submission should be submitted as an attachment and sent to Hannah Gebresilassie at[email protected]no later than January 27, 2017All documents should include the student’s first and last name, school, grade, teacher and guardian contact info.

 

  • A panel of judges including the president of the Atlanta Dream, Theresa Wenzel, will review the essays and select the winners. Winners will be notified in February.

 

  • One winner will be selected from elementary, middle, and high school equaling (3) total winners. The (3) winners will be recognized on the court during a Dream home game. We will share more details when we solidify the game logistics. We will also draw names from all finalists and award them with tickets and prizes.

 

  • Winners will receive the following:

o   Elementary school: A visit from the Atlanta Dream and tickets to a Dream game during our 10th anniversary season in 2017.

o   Middle school:  A visit from the Atlanta Dream and tickets to a Dream game during our 10th anniversary season in 2017.

o   High school: A $500 scholarship from the Atlanta Dream Youth Foundation and tickets to a Dream game during our 10th anniversary season in 2017.

 

Contest Timeline:

 

Submission due date: January 27, 2017

Winners notified: February 10, 2017

 

The Dream will tip off its historic 10th season at its new home, McCamish Pavilion on the Georgia Tech campus, Sunday, May 21 against the visiting Chicago Sky.
