In what is not a surprise to many in the NBA world the Los Angeles Lakers have fired head coach Mike Brown who was in his second year in his contract. The Lakers signed Mike Brown as a replacement for the retired Phil Jackson giving him a deal worth a guaranteed $18 million in the first three seasons with a team option in the fourth.

The Lakers were 0-8 in the preseason and are currently 1-4 in this young season. Assistant coach Bernie Bickerstaff will coach the Lakes tonight when they face the Golden Warriors.

Lakers great Magic Johnson sent out these tweets regarding Mike Brown’s firing:

“Feel bad for Coach Mike Brown, who’s a great guy, but don’t think he was the right guy for the job in the first place,”

“I’d love to see Phil Jackson or Brian Shaw. Wish Pat Riley was available.”

The Lakers will not start the search for a long term replacement coach.  The list of likely candidates include former Phoenix Suns and New York Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni, former Utah coach Jerry Sloan, former Lakers assistant Brian Shaw, former Portland Trail Blazer coach Nate McMillian or the zen master himself Phil Jackson.
