When 2 Chainz wanted to make a splash with the cover artwork for his upcoming Def Jam-debut album, Based On A T.R.U. Story, he knew just who to call—his good pal, Kanye West.
According to Billboard, Yeezy referred him to photographer Fabien Montique from his new creative company DONDA (which is named after Kanye’s late mother, Donda West).
What resulted was a simple shot of two gold chains. The Atlanta rapper spoke to Billboard about Kanye helping him bring the simple, clean look to life.
“Kanye and I share a similar vision and think along the same lines creatively,” Chainz said. “So, when it came time to develop the imagery for my project, I trusted him and his team at DONDA to get the job done and communicate my sentiments. They were the first people I thought of.
“Their team is unprecedented,” he said. “Expect next level imagery, sonics and stage performance. This is curated art. The Louvre of rap.”
2 Chainz has created a lot of fine art on the mic as of late, working with everyone from Kanye and his G.O.O.D. Music team to Nicki Minaj, 50 Cent, Young Jeezy, Rick Ross and most recently alongside Meek Mill and R&B crooner Jeremih on DJ Drama’s single, “My Moment.”
2 Chainz’ own single, the Drake-assisted “No Lie,” continues to sizzle, while his contribution to G.O.O.D. Music’s “Mercy” helped the single reach platinum certification on Thursday (July 5).
Based On A T.R.U. Story is slated for an August 14 release on Def Jam Records
