Azealia Banks stops by Hot 97’s Ebro In The Morning show to talk about a variety of topics. She talks about her background, ethnicity, growing up in Washington Heights but being enriched in the Dominican culture. They talked about her big single, “212“.
They talked about her deal with Interscope and her Polydor UK label. She said her album budget was $2 million, and it wasn’t a 360 deal. They were upset they were paying for studio time, and she was releasing music for free.
She talked about getting out of her deal, and finding TuneCore where she uploads her own music on iTunes for $75 a year. She used that service to put her music on iTunes so she can can make revenue.
Banks had no problem calling out Macklemore and Iggy Azalea for being nominated for Grammy’s and not making better music than black hip hop music. Azealia said “That Macklemore album wasn’t better than the Drake record,” and “That Iggy Azalea shit is not better than any fu**in’ black girl that’s rapping today.” This led to Banks critiquing “The Grammys are supposed to be awards for artistic excellence… Iggy Azalea’s not excellent,”. She also mentioned “I have a problem when you’re trying to say that it’s hip-hop and you’re trying to put it up against black culture.”
Continuing her frustration with the industry, she cried as she realized white America and capitalism is robbing her of her identity. Azealia makes a very interesting yet deep point when she says “at the very fu**in’ least, ya’ll owe me the right to my fu**in’ identity. And to not exploit that shit. That’s all we’re holding onto, like hip-hop and rap. And Bill Cosby, and whatever the f**k it is. Ya’ll putting that on TV for the youth to fu**in’ see.” She expresses because she feels this way they are making her look like the “black bitter bitch.”
That led into Banks calling T.I. a “coon” for promoting Iggy and his wife, Tiny. The exact quote was “You out here trying to promote this white bitch. They got your wife on VH1 and that bitch can’t fu**in’ read. You’re a fu**in’ shoe shinin’ coon. How dare you.”
