Sometimes, you just have to throw a middle finger to the haters, fill up your cup, and not give a f*ck—at least, that’s the advice passionately delivered by the Los Angeles by way of North Carolina-based rapper, Fluent on his latest drop, “Getting Paid.”
The bass-heavy loosie kicks off with a blunted opening verse from guest Yung L.A., an Atlanta-repping spitter who serves as the laid-back counterpart to Fluent’s hype, direct approach in the booth. Their varied takes on pushing aside their detractors is compelling, partially because it sounds like Yung L.A. already indulged in the stash that Fluent raps about in his first few bars.
He goes on to stunt on anyone throwing shade his way, all the while showcasing his technical skills—putting his mouth where his money is, so to speak. The booming instrumental you’re hearing, by the way? It’s handled by frequent collaborator J. Cardim, who supplied every heater heard on Fluent’s past two albums, Supreme Victory and SV2.
Go ahead and give “Getting Paid” a listen, just make sure you have the bass turned all the way up.
