This past weekend, Emmis New York’s WBLS-FM 107.5, 1190 WLIB-AM and WQHT-FM Hot 97, hosted the 12th annual Circle of Sisters Expo at the Jacob Javits Center in Manhattan. Circle of Sisters, for those unfamiliar, is the largest expo in NYC that unites, motivates and celebrates women of color. Some of the biggest names in entertainment, health, food, business, and more came together with one main purpose: to celebrate women! The event kicked off on Oct. 15th with appearances by the Brooklyn Steppers Marching Band, Chef Vonda McPherson, Clifton Powell (star of Saints & Sinners), Rotimi, Mona Scott Young (producer of Love & Hip Hop), Ninja Devoe (Luke Cage actress) and Shannon LaNier. NBA veteran and champion, John Salley was also in attendance, showcasing his favorite vegan eats alongside Chef Brenda Beener.
During the Breakout Sessions, Hot 97’s Laura Stylez showcased the latest trends in beauty. In the Special Events Hall, Rev. Al Sharpton, Raqiyah (WBLS) and Common, discussed healthy relationships and marriages. There were also two State of Black America panels, a How to Change the Current Paradigm panel, which Hot 97’s Ebro and Opal Tometi (Black Lives Matter) participated in.
On Sunday, Oct 16th, there was a Gospel service led by WLIB’s Bishop Hezekiah Walker, a discussion panel on women’s health, a comedy stand-up routine from Luenell, and another set of performances to wrap up the 2-day event.
