Air Jordan is set to become Rev Jordan, as Michael is partnering up with a NASCAR legend to begin his own racing team, and Bubba Wallace will be behind the wheel.
On Monday, MJ and Denny Hamlin announced that they were kicking off a new, single car NASCAR Cup Series team for 2021.
Michael writes, “Growing up in North Carolina, my parents would take my brothers, sisters & me to races, and I’ve been a NASCAR fan my whole life. The opportunity to own my own racing team in partnership w/my friend, Denny Hamlin, & to have Bubba Wallace driving for us, is very exciting for me.” He then stated that the timing is ideal to include more Black owners in NASCAR, which is infamous for its struggle with diversity.
MJ adds, “In addition to the recent commitment and donations I have made to combat systemic racism, I see this as a chance to educate a new audience and open more opportunities for Black people in racing.” Denny also stated that the fact that he was the 1st Jordan sponsored driver resulted in the collaboration, as he explained the reason BW was the perfect fit.
Bubba, left the Richard Petty Motorsports team earlier this year, as he got caught in the middle of the noose scandal. He stated that it is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity which he couldn’t let go.
He adds, “Both Michael and Denny are great competitors & are focused on building the best team they possibly can to go out and compete for race wins. I’m grateful and humbled that Michael and Denny believe in me and I’m super pumped to begin this adventure with them.”
It is reported that Denny purchased the charter from Germain Racing, and MJ will emerge as the principal owner, while Denny will be a minority partner as he drives the Joe Gibbs Racing. It is a multi-year deal that Bubba been signed in for.
