Starting a career as an independent music artist is both easier and harder than it ever has been. On the one hand, there have never been this many channels available to budding musicians to release or promote their music. From Soundcloud to any social network, the sheer number of tools independent musicians have at their disposal is truly amazing.
On the other hand, the very fact that the barrier to entry has been lowered by technological advances means that, no matter how many channels there are for musicians, each one of them will be crowded. The overabundance of music has had many different effects, from cheapening it to making it much harder for artists to cut through all the noise.
Austin Godsey doesn’t seem to have a problem with that, though. The Houston-based songwriter and artist is building a solid career as an independent music artist one great song at a time. When asked about his secrets to staying recognizable among all the talent out there, he has a couple he likes to share.
The first is his devotion to the craft. Any artist who even thinks about “making it big,” or the equivalent of that in the digital age, has to be a full package. They have to be a creative machine that’s also able to deliver in the studio and on the stage. For artists looking to write their songs, the ability to stay engaged and provide value throughout the whole production process is of key importance.
Equally important is understanding the tech that underpins the business today. Austin Godsey knows how to work social media. He knows how to best release his music so that it reaches his fans wherever they like to hang out online. This is the part that a lot of independent artists don’t understand yet; in the digital era, everyone is their own hype person, manager, PR team, and just an all-around marketer. Seeing the business any differently is a surefire way to end up with a 360 deal with some greedy record company, and that’s not something Austin Godsey would advise.
