Who is KYDEA?

February 1, 2021 0

Born in Montreal but raised in Ottawa, Kydea is an emerging Hip-Hop artist heavily influenced by the greats such as Drake, Young Thug, Big Sean, Meek Mill and many more. Growing up listening to pop and whatever was on the radio, it is not until 2013 Kydea started listening to Hip-Hop and completely fell in love with every aspect of it. His passion drove him to put his creativity on paper and release his first song, “N.N.I.T” in 2015 on Soundcloud. Since then, he has released his first platform-wide project “GOIN’ KRAZY”, alongside many other singles, which have been able to showcase his fun ear-catching ability to flow and rhyme, his diversity, and wordplay in songs like”Goin’ Loko”, “Right off the Bat”, “Grey Skies”, “HellKat”,”Wave Check” etc. Music was never an option until he let his thoughts flow and put them on a beat. Now his dream is rapidly becoming a reality.
1. What is your name?

I go by Kydea

2. Would you rather have ?50k in cash or a perfect credit score, and why?

I would choose a perfect credit score. A perfect credit score will get you further in life. Money is cool and all but at the end of the day, it is something you can acquire way easier than a perfect score. I tend to not always think in the moment but rather in my future. If I had 50K cash, sure I could either blow it all at the moment or I could invest it, but realistically 50K is temporary. As opposed to a perfect credit score, if I wanted to buy a house or a car, whether it would be for myself or for my parents, a perfect score facilitates the process.

3. Who is your favorite producer?

Jheez, if I had to choose right now based on what I have been listening to, I would say Chopsquad DJ or Hit-Boy. They make nothing but crazy beats would love to work with them one day.

4. Are you a touring artist or a recording artist?

I am currently a recording artist. At this point in my music career, I would have obviously wanted to be a touring artist but due to covid and other circumstances, it isn’t my time yet. Hopefully soon though.

5. Have you ever thought about quitting music?

I have many times. Being from Ottawa, it is mad hard to receive support and to get noticed by people with power in the music industry. I would put the most amount of work into a song, think it’s the best thing I have ever done, release it, then the reception is mad cold. Ottawa is honestly a city that follows trends. The audience doesn’t want to support someone until they are already supported elsewhere, I think most Ottawa artists would agree with me. There were times where I wasn’t hitting my stream count goals for a week or I just felt uninspired.  On top of that, I am a university student so I’ve had a lot on my plate. But I always just think that thinking these things is apart of the process and another hurdle to get past.

6. Favorite Era of music?

I would have to say 2010-2020 for sure. I mean I was born in 1999 and really started to listen to music for real in around 2007/2008. But 2010-2020 are unrivaled in my opinion. Those years received so many variations of rap and hip-hop that is still shaping the sound of today. Don’t get me wrong though, I love 2000-2010 and 90’s music, but 2010-2020 was just different.

7. Do you plan on traveling?

Fasho, I have always traveled a lot as a kid with my family and it was mad fun but as I got older I realized I didn’t even remember what I did in some of these places I visited, or what I saw. I think that if I were to visit some places now I would not only immerse myself deeper in the culture but also remember and enjoy things better. Unfortunately, COVID messed up all types of plans but once it’s done, I’m trynna pull up to Japan, Europe, LA, Dominican Republic…all types of places.

8. Are you an independent artist or are you signed or under any management?

I am currently an independent artist. I do everything by myself. Marketing, Recording, Mixing, Mastering, I do it all.

9. What was your most memorable concert, did you perform at it?

My most memorable concert was probably Migos when they pulled up to Bluesfest. They really had the whole city turnt up and everyone was at this concert. They had just dropped Culture so I knew all the lyrics and it was just a crazy experience. Unfortunately, I didn’t perform but it would have been crazy too.
I’d say the most memorable concert I have ever performed at was YBN Cordae. That was no doubt the most turnt concert I have ever performed at, the energy in the room was there, people were supporting even if they didn’t necessarily know who I was and I honestly just had a great time.

10. What was your biggest challenge that you had to overcome during your music career, so far?

The biggest challenge I’d say I’m currently overcoming would be being comfortable with showing my music prior to the release date. What I mean by that is sending my music to people to get honest opinions. I used to never be able to do that because obviously I was scared of what people would say and just drop the song and then if they had criticism, use the “ah okay well ill do that next time” excuse to cope with the criticism, and I was also trying to create the element of surprise to people that listened to me. Eventually, I realized the best thing I can do for myself and my music is to listen to what the people that listen to me have to say to improve my sound. I also realized that this whole element of surprise thing was limiting how satisfied I was with people who heard my music. Obviously, I want to be global but with these restrictions, I put it on myself to see what people around me would say about the song when I already dropped and it felt like my targeted audience wasn’t the world, but my circle. Ever since then, I have been able to improve my sound to greater lengths and increase my fan base.
