Australian rapper Neo Pitso aims for 100 songs in 100 days. Overly ambitious or achievable, we’ll let you decide.

We’ve all experienced the feeling of procrastinating then suddenly having to activate deadline mode. We end up having to work under pressure as the due date approaches mercilessly. For many this is standard procedure, for others a once in a blue moon occurrence. Regardless of how you burn the midnight oil, it’s  sensible to assume this isn’t the ideal way to produce quality material on a consistent basis.

As a creative I would argue that you shouldn’t rush your projects simply because a deadline approaches. Rushing leads to low quality material and a decrease in respect from your peers and fans, that have grown to expect quality from you as a creative. As the old adage goes, the quickest way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time.

Neo has a short yet remarkable discography. He has come along way since his debut The Outlier a few years ago.  The Neo Pitso EP that followed, was an exponential leap both sonically and lyrically. Neo’s flow, wordplay, melodies and the way he uses his voice as an instrument is nothing short of amazing. Stand out tracks include 1206, Ape Sh*t, Money First and Savage.  Recently, he blessed our ears with Crüe Lobe, an ode to his ex, Fuggaparahee and the hypnotic and catchy Monopoly, that always has heads bopping when it starts playing. I mention all this to make a point that Pitso can definitely create memorable music with long lasting impact. His past success should give fans hope for his future releases. Having faith is one thing but expecting him to live up to his promise to release 100 songs in 100 days is unreasonable.

There are 4 months left in the year but this is no reason to rush perfection. Neo can release other material such as photos, behind the scenes footage and unreleased songs to keep his fans interested. One way or another he’s going to need a plan. Fans have not heard a release since his sleeper hit, Monopoly back in 2021. Whilst I can acknowledge the release of the video in 2022 I’m more focused on compositions i.e. songs. We can only wait in anticipation to hear his new material. I would like to believe that I am wrong and that Neo Pitso has a plethora of songs he’s sitting on that just have not been released. He could just be waiting for the right moment. It could also be that announcing he will be releasing 100 songs in 100 days is simply a marketing tactic.

Neo recently partnered up with the creators behind Tones & I videos, monkey dance and eyes don’t lie for his Fuggaparahee music video. This is a brilliant move that will not only take his videos to the next level but also introduce him to a new demographic. It’s safe to say that in 2022 independent artists are expected to wear many hats beyond just being an artist. They also have to be marketers, social media geniuses, managers, publicists and record labels. As if that wasn’t enough they also require a budget to create their material and put it out to the world. Neo has managed to delegate some of these roles and seems to be doing relatively alright. That said he  can definitely be more consistent with putting out material and updating fans with what he’s working on.

100 songs in 100 days is not impossible with preparation. If I was a rapper like Neo Pitso, with a respectable following I would opt for the Russ method instead. What’s the Russ method you ask? Releasing one song each week for a full year. That is my suggestion but what do I know, I’m just a journalist that lives and breathes journalism, I just happen to love hip hop.

Dear Neo, I don’t know if you’ll ever read this but if by some chance luck meets opportunity and you do, please consider the Russ method. The world has to hear more of your creations. I believe you’re sitting within an acre of diamonds and all it requires is the right tools to uncover it. Many fans would request a shout out or autograph I simply want to see you win. Good luck sir and in the wise words of one of my favourite artists may you stay blessed and obsessed with success.
