Newark, NJ based-label 100 Percent Pure Music has been a foundation to stardom for one of hip-hop’s biggest movements as of late, popularly known as Jersey Club Music. With renowned talent like NJ rap phenom Bandmanrill and Grammy-nominated producer MC Vertt carrying the historic sound forward, record executive Dawan Brown has truly set an example for the entire state, providing the younger crowd opportunities to change the scope of their lives through art. Founded in 2018, Brown got 100 Percent Pure Music up and running with his first artist, the late JiG. After JiG’s passing, Brown opened the official ‘Extensive Notes’ recording studio, where even more magic was created, and connections made. Come 2021, 100 Percent Pure Music signed their official second artist, Bandmanrill, which would essentially be a big break for the label. Shortly after, DB brought in super producers like newly grammy-nominated MCVert, and the originator of the Jersey club sound, Jayhood. Eventually expanding their roster with artists like Zeffy Lee, and GFatss, the growing label is on the way up the ladder with solid talent, and more to come.
Brown proved himself to be one of a kind, given there aren’t too many success stories within the Jersey hip-hop scene. “What I’m doing is big for New Jersey as a whole… We don’t see much here but pain, so I want to go as hard as possible until we all win. We are in the stages of being the biggest label across the state,” said Brown. Partnering with Warner Music Group to get Bandmanrill off the ground was literally groundbreaking for 100 Percent Pure and Newark in general, and coming back with MCVertt was just golden — creating popularity in the airwaves with the hometown sound.
Developing strategy and space to sign new talent, Brown has an ear for uniqueness. When scouting an artist, if one catches his ear, he likes to break ice with them and see how their creative processes are.
