Veteran DJs Rob Swift and Rasul A. Mowatt officially announce the release date for their upcoming book The City of Hip-Hop: New York City, The Bronx, and a Peace Meeting. The book will be available for purchase on Tues., Dec. 17 and can be pre-ordered HERE.
The book tells the tale of hip-hop history and argues it was the political forces of the 1970s, combined with economic forces of free market capitalism and privatization of public services, neoliberalism, and the deindustrialization of major cities, that led to the cultural creation of the “Boogie Down” Bronx. Swift and Mowatt provide readers with an intimate look at the artistry, struggles and triumphs of the world’s biggest music genre.
Over the last two years, the history of hip-hop has been celebrated for its cultural impact all over the world, but the true essence of the genre is commonly overlooked. Although many have seen hip-hop flourish into the music industry’s No. 1 genre, The City of Hip-Hop shines a light on the oppressive environment, financial distress and economic hardships in which hip-hop was birthed. The City of Hip-Hop provides a comprehensive look at genre’s evolution from its grassroots beginnings to its status as a global phenomenon.
The authors of the book encourage readers to not lose sight of the bigger picture as they provide a more introspective point of view about how and why hip-hop was created in comparison of the present-day climate of the genre. Rob Swift states, “This book is a celebration of hip-hop and its profound impact on our culture. We want to inspire readers to appreciate the art form and understand its roots.” Rasul A. Mowatt adds, “Hip-hop has a powerful narrative of resilience and creativity. Our goal is to highlight its complexities and the events that have shaped its history.”
An exploration of hip-hop’s role in addressing social issues, in addition to reflecting its power as a vehicle for change and expression, The City of Hip-Hop takes a deep dive into hip-hop history with a foreword from legendary hip-hop pioneer Chuck D. The book is highly recommended for students, scholars, and general readers interested in urban planning, urban design, urban geography, place-making, American Studies, Cultural Studies, Black Studies and Latin American Studies.
