Head shops don’t get renovated often enough. Most of us have a mental image of the genre baked in from decades of visits: fluorescent lighting, a glass case doing double duty as both display and security measure, and a layout that rewards regulars while leaving everyone else standing around waiting to flag someone down. Signature Smoke Shop, opening this year at 3719 JFK Boulevard in Jersey City, is making a case for something different, and it’s arriving at a moment when the category it belongs to is worth more money, and more design attention, than it has in years.
The numbers back that up. The global smoking accessories market was valued at 10.6 billion dollars in 2025 and is on pace to hit 11.3 billion dollars this year, with analysts projecting it to nearly double to around 20.5 billion dollars by the mid-2030s. That growth is being driven by expanding legalization, a wave of new dab rigs and modular recyclers built more like premium audio gear than throwaway pieces, and a customer base that increasingly wants the shop experience to match the quality of what’s in the case. Signature Smoke Shop is walking into that shift with a floor plan that treats glass, papers, and accessories as their own destination categories rather than an afterthought crammed behind the register.

The shop’s layout separates premium cigars, disposable vapes, nicotine pouches, rolling papers, cones, wraps, hookah gear, charcoal, and glass and smoke accessories into their own clearly marked sections, all set against a black and gold interior with digital screens instead of hand-taped signage. It’s a small thing until you’ve spent enough time in shops where finding a specific paper brand means waiting behind three other people at one counter. A convenience aisle stocked with drinks, snacks, batteries, and chargers means a run to the shop can actually be a one-stop errand instead of the first of two.
Behind the counter, the shop is running on the Square retail platform for real time inventory, which should cut down on the classic head shop letdown of driving over for something specific only to find it’s out of stock with no way to check ahead. A branded app is also in the works, aimed at letting customers browse what’s actually on the shelf and set up pickup or delivery before they even leave the house, a convenience that bigger dispensary chains have had for a while and that independent smoke shops are only now starting to catch up on.
Jersey City’s JFK Boulevard is in the middle of its own transformation right now, with new development reshaping the corridor and a wave of new businesses opening across Hudson County this year. A head shop willing to invest in layout, tech, and an actual design point of view fits right into that momentum, and it’s a reminder that this category has room to grow up without losing what made it worth showing up for in the first place.
