Singer-songwriter, performer, and former social worker Sharmila is using her voice to raise awareness about what she describes as years of personal hardship while continuing to pursue her music career and advocate for accountability.

Originally trained in social work, Sharmila worked with children’s homes, women’s shelters, and refugees in the Netherlands while building her music career. From an early age, her daughter, Tanisha, accompanied her to  recording  studios and performances, where she learned about  the music industry. Sharmila also trained in jazz ballet for eight years during her childhood before later taking vocal lessons.

According to Sharmila, after publicly identifying herself as an artist in 2013 and sharing videos of her music and personal concerns online, she experienced years of censorship, discrimination, and institutional mistreatment. She alleges that she was prevented from freely pursuing her artistic career, separated from her daughter for several years, and subjected to treatment that caused lasting personal, professional, and emotional harm. According to Sharmila, the events she describes since 2013 have resulted in lasting physical and emotional effects.

Sharmila further states that she and her daughter stayed at a women’s shelter in Rotterdam in 2013, where she believes inaccurate reports contributed to subsequent events that profoundly affected their lives. She also alleges that she was confined for approximately ten years within organizations operating in the social work sector and that her intellectual property as an artist was harmed during that period.

The loss of her daughter, Tanisha, in 2021 remains a defining moment in Sharmila’s life and has strengthened her determination to speak publicly about her experiences through music and advocacy.

“I continue to use my voice because I believe no individual should be silenced for expressing who they are,”

Sharmila said. “Through my music and my advocacy, I hope to encourage awareness, accountability, and meaningful dialogue.”

Representing herself, Sharmila says she has submitted information and correspondence to several national and international institutions, including  authorities within the Netherlands and  European organizations, seeking review of her experiences.

Despite the challenges she describes, Sharmila remains focused on creating music and sharing her story with audiences  worldwide. She  hopes her journey will  inspire  conversations about  equality,  freedom of expression, and support for vulnerable individuals.
