A Black inmate who died in Ohio prison custody in February was allegedly attacked by seven prison staff members who used unjustified and excessive force. As he was being escorted outside without shoes or a coat, Heath Causey carried out a “take-down” on McDaniel, “causing his body to swerve off the path and lie face-down in a snowy area.”

A nurse did not perform a standard medical examination or check McDaniel’s vital signs, taking less than a minute to examine him at the medical center. When he reached the outside of the building, he collapsed for the final time. An outpatient clinic was summoned and CPR performed, but he died.
In a few hours, Jamie Dukes, a nurse, signed a medical form indicating that McDaniel refused treatment, even though she was not present.
The director Annette Chambers-Smth told reporters in July that after monitoring images of an event had been published to the public, “We’re accountable for what transpired in the video.” “About it there is no question.”
“Stress-induced sudden cardiac death” was listed as the cause of McDaniel’s death by the Franklin County Coroner’s office. His face, head, shoulders, wrists, knees, feet, hands, belly and toes were wounded. He suffered. Whether the prison employees who were involved in McDaniel’s death will be criminally charged will be decided by a county prosecutor.
