AFROPUNK festivals blend elements like food, dance, tech, and music in an effort to celebrate Black culture and enhance community understanding. This weekend, AFROPUNK hosted Planet AFROPUNK Live: Miami, bringing thrilling performances and a charged countercultural energy to the 305. Hosted at The Urban, in the city’s historic, and historically Black, community of Overtown, the first-ever Planet AFROPUNK Live: Miami offered a day of thought-provoking conversation, followed by two days of incredible music and activations like the Spinthrift Market, a shop market full of talented makers, selectors and curators from all across the diaspora, and AFROPUNK’s Bites ‘n Beats, the literal embodiment of “food for the soul,” which provided event-goers an opportunity to indulge in cuisines from renowned chefs and local food trucks.

The first night of the festival brought energizing performances from the likes of Stonebwoy and Mavado, who made the crowd jump with raucous riddims from Ghana and Jamaica, respectively, as well as the genre-bending beats of ChocQuibTown, soulful Spanish-language songs from YEИDRY, and a blazing DJ set from Major Lazer member Walshy Fire. Sunday kept the groove coming, with a headlining performance from red hot dancehall artist Skillibeng, who performed his first-ever concert in the United States, a tasteful DJ set from local hero Silent Addy, a star turn from rising Afrobeats rapper Prettyboy D-O, and a surprise-filled set from Michael Brun, who brought out a litany of special guests from around the globe.

Planet AFROPUNK Live: Miami ushers in a new era of AFROPUNK live experiences, allowing for all elements of local culture to be expressed freely and fully. The first live AFROPUNK event since the onset of the pandemic, Planet AFROPUNK Miami sets the pace for a busy year for the AFROPUNK brand, as it expands into new cities and prepares to do it big for its flagship event in Brooklyn. Planet AFROPUNK lands in Minneapolis this June, with artists like Ari Lennox, Noname, and more in tow.
