When describing a shop or business as boutique, typically, it means that the shop or business specializes in certain products or services and is small in size or geographical reach. However, some boutiques are able to reach the masses on a major scale. Bay Eight Recording Studios is one of them.
Bay Eight Recording Studios is billed as a high-end, medium-sized boutique studio, but nothing about the studio is small. The music studio, located in North Miami Beach, Florida, brandishes three rooms and has top of the line software, installations, and equipment. The studio itself has been around for over twenty years. At its inception, it was called, “Midnight Blue Studios.” However, a little over seven years ago, multi-platinum audio engineer Matthew “Formatt” DeFreitas purchased the studio, renovated it a couple of times, and rebranded the studio to what it is today, Bay Eight Recording Studios.
A couple of factors went into Formatt’s decision to start Bay Eight Recording Studios. For one, Formatt wanted to have the ability to operate on his own terms. His music career started out as an intern and freelancing, so he has been able to discern between what works and what doesn’t work, and what he likes and what he doesn’t like – businesswise and creatively-wise. “I’ve seen large-scale studios lose millions, and I’ve seen small-scale studios thrive,” Formatt said. Another driving factor for creating the historic Bay Eight Recording Studios was the music itself. Formatt wanted to create a place for creatives to flourish and cultivate their sound. He wanted to have a true, positive impact in artists’ music journeys and the music industry in general. “I want everyone to leave here and feel that something magical just happened, and I want them to feel it so intensely that Bay Eight becomes a necessary part of their recording process.” Formatt continued, “The same way a drummer needs a drumstick to play, I want musicians to feel that way about Bay Eight.”
Through Formatt’s proven methods, he has been able to establish a studio, and a brand, that has been integral in numerous artists’ success. With a staff of only about thirty, Bay Eight Recording Studios has been able to draw in a slew of local talent and global superstars. The boutique studio is also a GRAMMY Award-winning, multi-platinum studio. The studio has been featured in notable publications such as XXL and Billboard.
Bay Eight Recording Studios’ success is a testament to Formatt and his team’s hard work, sacrifice, innovation, and integrity. “Seize every opportunity, no matter how small.
