Learning Talent: Mass of Man’s Advice For Emerging Artists

July 21, 2022 0

It’s always the question we pose to our idols, those who have achieved our goals: What advice can you give?

We recently had the opportunity to ask this of Rhode Island rapper, Mass of Man, who began building his tight-knit fanbase on Facebook back in 2015 and is now a renowned artist and mental health advocate in the music industry.

His answer was one of the best we’ve heard.

Mass of Man began rapping in his highschool lunchroom, where rap battles were a daily activity among his classmates. He watched them trading rhymes for a bit before participating himself, but quickly came to love it so much that he took it home and small rhymes eventually turned into full songs. Of course, they didn’t begin as the hits he is known for today. He almost happily admitted this, laughing as he reflected on his early days- and almost every artist in the world can relate all too well.

When asked what guidance he would give to anyone out there dreaming of becoming a musician- to the kids in the lunchrooms today- he spoke on the importance of not giving up because of those first attempts. He explained it so simply yet so powerfully- if you love it, you do it. If it’s bad, keep doing it until it’s good. He emphasized the truest statement of all, most people are not born with all of the talent in the world– it’s learned, it’s earned, and it’s a skill. If you love it, you can’t stop because you think you aren’t good at it. You do it every day until you are great at it.

Furthermore, he expanded that this should go far beyond the music industry, and spoke about how much life changes when you do what you love instead of doing what you think you have to do- throwing yourself into that job you have to work, but you aren’t happy doing. Putting what you love on the back burner to make time for that job every day. It’s a cycle that we can easily trap ourselves in. It’s only when you put what you love first and never stop that your passion can actually become your job.

So, if you are waiting for your sign to make your passion your job, this is it from Mass of Man himself- and if you think you aren’t good enough at your passion, well, you better just keep doing it. There’s a reason you love it, after all.
