[Boston, MA, United States]: Grammy-nominated and award-winning vocalist Debo Ray has released Going Down, the first single from her upcoming four-song EP titled Echoes and Embers. The new project follows her highly acclaimed, self-titled debut album and introduces a deeply personal body of work centered on mental health and emotional resilience.
Echoes and Embers sets up as a narrative arc that addresses Debo Ray’s mental health struggles, the effects those struggles have had on her life, and her determination to come out the other side. The debut track, Going Down, presents Ray at one of her lowest emotional points.
“I wrote this song about one of the darkest points in my life where no matter what I did to survive, it felt like I kept falling lower into my neurosis and that it was my own fault,” said Ray. “I don’t wish that feeling on anyone, but if that resonates with others, I hope this song helps to release that energy.”
The single was written by Debo Ray along with Jerry Velona, John Kim, and producer Prince Charles Alexander. It was recorded at Dimension Sound in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts.
Musically, Going Down is a contemporary alternative R&B track with a moody, almost dreamy and contemplative vibe that builds into a cathartic chorus marked by Debo Ray’s intensity and vocal prowess. Ray is known as one of today’s most versatile vocalists, with a professional resume that includes jazz, metal, hip hop, opera, rock, and soul. In Going Down, that versatility is fully on display.
While Going Down is the only track currently released from Echoes and Embers, the EP, which releases on May 22nd, continues the broader emotional narrative. Debo Ray has stated that the project is about “the struggle to reclaim ourselves with the necessary balance of strength, grace, and hope,” adding that she hopes the music will be relatable and useful to listeners as well as enjoyable.
To celebrate the release, Ray and her all-star band will perform live at The Boston Harbor Distillery on Saturday, February 28th at 8:30 PM. The band will feature three of Boston’s finest female vocalists, Loren Benn, Jess Curran, and Lydia “Lovely Singer” Harrell, who will sing with Debo and also perform some of their own music along with special guests. Tickets are available through 24 Hour Music.
