February 1st began a new era for the NBA. After 30 years on the job and taking the league to new heights, former NBA commissioner David Stern retired and left the job in the care of former league deputy commissioner Adam Silver. Silver has long worked under David Stern learning business and marketing structure so he should be well prepared.
NBA fans, players and executives have known since 2012 when Stern announced his plans to step down that Adam Silver would take over as Commissioner and many are excited to see just what he will do. With the NBA growing internationally and with marquee players such as Lebron James and Kevin Durant lighting up the stat sheets every night, the NBA should be in great shape. “Silver served as NBA Deputy Commissioner and Chief Operating Officer from July 1, 2006 to Jan. 31, 2014. Before serving as the league’s second-in-command, Silver spent more than eight years as President and COO, NBA Entertainment. Since joining the league in 1992, Silver also held positions of Senior VP & COO, NBA Entertainment; NBA Chief of Staff; and Special Assistant to the Commissioner.
Silver has helped establish the NBA as one of the world’s preeminent sports leagues, as a model for global sports marketing organizations, and as one of the largest providers of sports programming in the world. He has been instrumental in many league accomplishments including playing a key role in the negotiations of the league’s last two television agreements, the last three collective bargaining agreements with the National Basketball Players Association, the development of the WNBA and NBA Development League, the partnership with Turner Broadcasting to jointly manage the NBA’s digital assets, and the creation of NBA China.
Silver has consistently been named one of the 100 Most Influential People in Sports by BusinessWeek, the Sporting News and the SportsBusiness Journal. He has also been recognized by Time Magazine and CNN on their list of Global Business Influentials, which features 20 of the world’s leading corporate executives.
In addition to serving on the boards of NBA China and the Lustgarten Pancreatic Cancer Foundation, Silver is a member of the University of Chicago Law School Visiting Committee.”
