This past Saturday, January 27th, BMI (Broadcast Music, Inc) presented its annual pre-GRAMMY event, How I Wrote That Song (HIWTS), in partnership with the Apollo Theater. Those in attendance were treated to an enlightening panel discussion that featured multi-platinum and GRAMMY award-winning music producer, Mark Batson, GRAMMY award-winning R&B royalty, Faith Evans, GRAMMY nominated R&B sensation, Tory Lanez, and GRAMMY award winning super producer, RedOne. BMI’s VP Creative, Catherine Brewton, moderated the panel as the stars shared insight on how their biggest hits came to be.
Faith Evans spoke on her recording process for Notorious B.I.G.’s tribute, “I’ll Be Missing You,” and how it made her a household name. Newcomer, Tory Lanez, stressed the importance of quality over quantity in an artist’s work and how he sets the bar high for his own music. Mark Batson shared a funny story behind the creative process of Anthony Hamilton’s, “Charlene.” And RedOne talked about the significance of working with artists he truly believes in, regardless of where they are in their career.
