Last month, More Than A Vote of LeBron James, launched a campaign called “We Got Next,” with the objective of increasing the number of poll workers in Black electoral districts. It has only been two weeks and it is already making an impact.

On Wednesday, More Than a Vote issued an announcement that over 10,000 poll workers have been recruited for the approaching November elections. James has collaborated with the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund to launch the campaign.

The efforts of the NBA superstar have been applauded by Barack Obama, who appeared virtually for Wednesday’s NBA Finals game to thank 40 first-time poll workers that were recruited by More Than A Vote, including Shaquille O’Neal.

“Always look forward to watching the NBA Finals — and tonight I had the chance to thank a great group of first-time poll workers with @morethanavote,” Obama tweeted. “It’s critical that everybody votes in this election — by mail or in person if you can.”

“We see you Mr President. Thank you!!!” James tweeted back to the former POTUS.

It is incredibly easy for interested poll workers to upload their names, contact details, as well as zip code on the More Than A Vote website, following which they can learn more about working the voting booths in their area. According to the website, the poll workers will receive PPE, training and also a flat rate daily payment in some cities.

“We have already seen the galvanizing force of youth and Black voices across the country in the wake of the death of George Floyd,” the website reads. “Voices of those standing in the streets in protest chanting ‘Black Lives Matter’ and imploring those in power to take notice.”

“You marched. You demanded change. Now, we’ve got to take advantage of the moment… More Than a Vote, the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, and Power The Polls are asking you to fight voter suppression by serving as a poll worker to ensure everyone in your community can safely vote this fall.”

Along with James, Draymond Green, Damian Lillard, Brittney Griner, Bun B, Michael Vick and more have also joined the campaign. Get involved here.
