BET’s “Ruff Ryders Chronicles” recent episode saw DMX getting emotional as he spoke openly regarding his mental health issues, particularly regarding his multiple personalities.
About 2:38 seconds into the interview, he was asked about his various sides. “They’re different things. There’s a few things, a few people in me — they get me through life,” he replied.
Then, X was asked what he wants the viewers to learn about his other personalities. “I wouldn’t want anyone to know anything,” the “X Gon’ Give It To Ya” emcee said. “I don’t talk about them. You already got me talking about them. Nope.”
“They’re there to get me through life. I don’t know if I made them or if God gave them to me, or maybe circumstances and situations did,” the New York native added, as he began to get emotional.
Tashera Simmons, DMX’s ex-wife, then said that the “X” personality “was created to protect ‘Earl,’” which is the rapper’s first name. “‘Earl’ was the child that could’ve been before his dad left and his mom just didn’t know how to handle him. ‘X’ was created to protect ‘Earl’ — to take on all the trauma of his childhood,” she said. “He’s the angry one. ‘DMX’ is the entertainer — he’s another protector of ‘Earl,’ but so much nicer.”
Way back in 2011, X first spoke about his multiple personalities and added that “X” was a bad person, although that is not who he really is.
“‘X’ is the bad guy. That’s not who I am. I’m not the person the media portrays me to be,” he said. Furthermore, he revealed that he was suffering from bi-polar disorder and that he did not know how to distinguish between “Earl” from “X.”
“I used to be really clear on who was what and what characteristics each personality had,” he continued. “But I don’t know. At this point, I’m not even sure there is a difference. I’m ‘Earl’ when I’m with my children. I miss my children, I miss my children.”
