Listening to this song by hip-hop artist GQueTv is directly related to public opinion about the Black Father. In addition, he also talks about the perspective of a person with children, who plays an active role in their lives. The smile and energy on his son’s face throughout the video speaks volumes which makes me believe that GQueTv works as it claims. But the title made me think, why is the black father missing or missing from the life of their seed. That’s where my personal research started, it was interesting and took me down a rabbit hole. In fact, I have found many articles on Google that say that black fathers are more involved with their children than in other groups. If this is true, where did all this absurdity come from?
Just because a black dad’s trope isn’t too crowded doesn’t mean it’s true. In 1965 democracy and assistant secretary of labor Daniel Patrick Moynihan compiled a report entitled: ‘The Negro Family: The Case of the National Action’ which became one of the most controversial political documents of the 20th century in America. The persistence of the stereotype, however, sheds light on the context within which we must raise our children–especially our sons. They will grow up, and we must raise them in a world that has a host of assumptions about who they are and what they are capable of.
Fathers play a critical role in the healthy development of children and families. This is why it’s important to address structural and systemic barriers that prevent Black men from being fully present in their children’s lives—so that all families have a chance to thrive.
