Mainey raps about neighborhood tensions and everyday escapades with the hindsight of a character having a flashback at the beginning of a movie.
His stories take place in and around Oklahoma and if you listen to him enough you can map out bits and pieces of the area without ever going there.
The highlight of Mainey’s sound is his delivery, filled with energy and Mainey’s energy is ferocious. As noticed on so many of his past releases, he elevates his tracks to another level with this superpower. But this time, he forms a rasp with the thumping percussion beat and bonds perfectly with 10 Toez Tank in trading high-intensity bars, which rap has witnessed so far this year. There’s no let off of steam, there’s no dull moment either. The duo’s chemistry sounds exciting right from the beat drop.
Yet again, the approach is replicated on “To the streets”. On the first verse where Mainey hands the reins to 10 Toez Tank for what’s a freewheeling delivery, the beat switches to a solemn one, still 10 Toez Tank stacks an icy, pacy verse reminding those who care to know of his legacy on the streets.
Mainey’s name might only be known in niche circles, but there’s something interesting about his pen, about his delivery and how he’s self-assured of his talent. To The Streets is packed with color, filled with exquisite storytelling presented by two of America’s rising rap voices.
