The intersection of Hip Hop and comic books is undeniable.
Rappers have been reference comic book storylines and characters since the early years of Hip Hop. A few years ago, even XXL Magazine created a “20 Hip Hop Songs Featuring The Best Comic Book References.” Popular lifestyle blog, Highsnobiety, also released their “10 Best Marvel References in Hip Hop” list among others (HotNewHipHop).
“Johnny Blaze the Ghost Rider (uhh)/Ghost stories by the campfire (uhh) We night breed (VAM-PIRE!)/Be duckin from the head rushin (uhh) Wu-Tang production (uhh)/Percussions bringin repercussions (uhh) I hold my mic sideways.” – Method Man
“So you’ll be Thor and I’ll be Odin/ You’re a rodent, I’m omnipotent.” – Eminem
“When they kidnapped your boy and forced me to do evil. I created an iron suit to protect my people. Escaped, bound to be Ironman the great. The billionaire Tony Starks’ll renew your fate.” – Ghostface Killah
These are just a few – out of MANY – lyrics that have fused the two cultural elements. So when this year’s New York Comic Con came rolling in, it was only right as both a fan of Hip Hop and comic books to attend. Access to all four days of the Con, each day offered an array of activations, panels, and some of the best cosplay costumes the city had to offer. Whether you’re a DC fan, a Marvel stan, a lover of anime, or a gamer – and everything else between, there was something for you to appreciate and enjoy.
From Dragonball Z’s and AMC’s The Walking Dead screenings, Game of Thrones themed tasting event for Johnnie Walker, Yu-Gi-Oh’s art gallery experience, DJ Steve Aoki’s comic book panel, and more, navigating between the various experiences throughout the weekend didn’t fall short of expectations. Witnessing the diverse crowd immersing themselves in the culture reminded me of Hip Hop’s unique influence.
