As Tony DeYoung continues to make waves in the hip-hop world, he takes a moment to reflect on the man who has been his rock throughout his life: his grandfather. Currently in the hospital and battling dementia, Tony’s grandfather is in critical condition, and the young rapper is opening up about the impact his grandfather has had on his life.
HipHopSince1987.com: Tony, thank you for taking the time to speak with us today. I know this must be a difficult time for you and your family.
Tony DeYoung: Thank you for having me. Yeah, it’s been tough. My grandfather is more than just a family member to me – he’s my hero.
HipHopSince1987.com: That’s beautiful. Can you tell us more about your grandfather’s influence on your life?
Tony DeYoung: My grandfather saved me and my brother from a horrible childhood. Our mom was struggling with drug and alcohol problems, and we were left to fend for ourselves. But my grandfather stepped in and gave us a normal home, with food on the table and clothes on our backs. He taught me my work ethic, how to respect women, and how to carry myself in life.
HipHopSince1987.com: Wow, that’s an incredible story. How is your grandfather’s health affecting you right now?
Tony DeYoung: It’s hard, man. Seeing him in the hospital, knowing that he’s not doing well… it’s tough to put into words. But at the same time, it’s motivated me to work even harder and to make him proud. I want to make sure that he knows how much I appreciate him and everything he’s done for me.
HipHopSince1987.com: That’s really beautiful, Tony. Is there a message you’d like to share with your grandfather, or with your fans and supporters?
Tony DeYoung: Yeah, I just want to say thank you to my grandfather for being such an amazing role model and inspiration in my life. And to my fans and supporters, I want to thank you for your love and support. It means the world to me, and it’s what keeps me going.
