There’s no discussing the legacy of rap music without mentioning Def Jam Recordings, and there’s no discussing Def Jam without mentioning Bill Adler.
Bill Adler was the original Director of Publicity at Def Jam from 1984 to 1990, working with the likes of LL Cool J, Slick Rick, The Beastie Boys, Public Enemy and EPMD, as well as with Run DMC and Whodini under Russell Simmons’s Rush Artist Management.
Beyond his work with Def Jam during its heyday, Bill Adler has amassed an unprecedented collection of records, print ads, lyrics and photographs pertaining to the history of hip hop, chronicling a visual and physical history of the greatest pop culture phenomenon of the late twentieth century.
Elite Daily had an exclusive opportunity to dig deep into The Adler Archives, sit down with the man who possesses encyclopedia-level knowledge of hip hop, and talk the past, present, and future of the culture. – Robert Gordon
